What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral composed of thin, durable fibers that are resistant to heat, fire, and chemicals. It was widely used in building materials and insulation throughout the 20th century. However, asbestos is hazardous when disturbed, as its microscopic fibers can become airborne and be inhaled, leading to serious health issues such as lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.
Health Effects
-
Mesothelioma – A rare and aggressive cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart, strongly linked to asbestos exposure.
-
Lung cancer – Often develops after prolonged exposure, especially in individuals who smoke.
-
Asbestosis – A chronic lung disease caused by scarring from asbestos fibers, leading to shortness of breath, coughing, and lung damage.
-
Pleural conditions – Such as pleural plaques, effusions, or thickening, which can impair breathing and lung function.
Testing helps protect health, ensure safe renovations or demolitions, complies with local, state, and federal regulations, and avoids costly contamination.
